About Us

Jamaica is a place of wonderful natural beauty - beaches, mountains, tropical forests, waterfalls - as well as stark social and economic contrasts. Kingston is located on the south coast of Jamaica, far from the tourist oriented north coast but still the centre of many tourist attractions as well as contrasts. It is also the home of the Kingston branch of the People of Praise.

Our history of living Christian community goes back to the mid-1970’s and the Cursillo movement and charismatic renewal. Even in those early days we had much exposure to the interdenominational aspect of renewal in Jamaica and out of those days emerged a Catholic community called the Family of God which, in 1987, became the People of Praise, Kingston – an ecumenical, charismatic, covenant, lay community. Like every other of the 21 branches of the community we have weekly community meetings and men’s and women’s group meetings, regular social gatherings where we share our meals and recreate and more – we have a lot of fun!

One of our principal outreaches is a street-feeding programme where we prepare and distribute food to about 150 people on the streets of Kingston. The need is great and in our desire to do even more we are assisted by many groups and individuals throughout the other branches of the community. It’s a genuine community-wide effort! We have 35 adult members, married couples as well as singles, and about 11 children.
